TERRA SIGNING ACADEMY (TSA) AT LANGUAGE SHOW LIVE 2016 HIGHLIGHTS

The Terra Team were once again helping to showcase British Sign Language and the Deaf Community at the 2016 Language Show Live held at London’s prestigious Kensington Olympia.
dsc_0740For 3 days over October 14th -16th thousands of people visited our stand and were able to access a myriad of informative media about all things BSL and ask our experienced staff all sorts of questions from beginning to learn BSL for themselves to community issues affecting Deaf people.
We were amazed at the massive interest registered by newcomers to begin learning some basic sign language skills, especially from many professionals who were committed to facilitating greater communication and access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals within their respective fields.dsc_0429
We ran 2 packed out taster sessions for those who wanted to see for themselves just how enjoyable learning some basic signs can be and we know that many enjoyed these so much that they are going further to join Terra’s Basic Level 1 Sign Language course.
dsc_0630
We also hosted 2 extra sessions of a BSL Language Plus, which enabled students to gain a greater depth of some BSL vocabulary and skills. Feedback from all these classes was brilliant with many expressions of appreciation for the quality and content of the compact but fun events.
TSA runs regular BSL courses throughout the
year at their East London venue in Bethnal Green. Students can join courses from Beginners Level 1 through to Advanced Level 6.
Language Show Live attendees can now benefit from fantastic discount offers when booking any Terra course of 5% for those with their Language show live ticket and 20% for those with their voucher for the Language Plus class.

TERRA Consultancy: year 2014 highlights

The TERRA Consultancy had a fantastic 2014 and our work continues to be fully in efforts to enhance the worldwide Deaf community, but firstly those based in the UK.

First on the list of the successful events was ‘Deaf Day’ at City Lit College in April, where, for the first time, we provided a unique business consultancy workshop entitled ‘Try Your Wings’.  In this exercise we addressed Deaf needs for an in depth understanding about the real business world.  We covered areas such as evaluation of own potentials, identifying target groups, PR, Marketing and CPD development. These were designed to help the Deaf understand the concept of business responsibility and gain an insight how to manage, run and maintain a newly established company.

TERRA is the proud partner for many Universities who support Deaf students in sourcing qualified educational BSL support. The academic support TERRA offers covers total management of fast-changing academic environments and uninterrupted support during sudden change of lesson plans. This includes busy examination periods in May. TERRA provides emergency support for all Deaf students erasing additional pressure or worry to have to source a suitable academic BSL support. This allows students to fully focus on their time to revise for exams. In this regards, all of our students passed their university exams! Great success!!!

In the summertime numerous students had a great and blissful  Day in July, which included having a fully-informed BSL environment so that they could enjoy their lifetime success in front of their family, friends and professors.

The next highlight was our contribution to the Deaf International Community that enhance promotion and opportunities for youngsters to participate in the ‘Miss and Mister Deaf International’. This event was great and we were happy to make some great shoots of crowning new Miss and Mister Beauty of the Deaf World.

Our next remarkable achievement was our partnership work in the Deaf community supporting unemployed Deaf people in getting the right support for their job interviews. We strived to make their dream of achieving a job come true.  In our previous reports we were saying that Deaf people without an appropriate BSL Interpreter could not succeed at job interviews. Now, with TERRA’s support many Deaf people have achieved a job thanks to our tailor-made service of supplying most suitable BSL support needed for any particular job.

TERRA is also proud of running a high level booking  system that is able to cover last minute bookings with a pool of BSL Interpreters for Deaf people to get the right access at the right time.

One of our proudest highlights has been the breakthrough introduction of the TERRA brand into the international Deaf community.  We have become recognized in the business sector for offering consultations and providing International Sign Language for Deaf people. This includes assisting ISL professionals in imminent situations, for example relay interpreting, international congresses and also in international entertainments.
This past summer, (2014) TERRA supported the People and Austerity campaign, providing BSL services to Deaf people so they could get correct information about the imminent event of benefits capping and related issues.

TERRA can also act as a ’bridge’ between employers and Deaf employees and provide practical guidance in developing effective communication strategies, as well as assisting with Access to Work applications, providing Communication Support Workers and BSL Interpreters in the workplace and Deaf Awareness Training.  An example of this was involving the support of an appeal for a Deaf client to stay in their employment and through this case and our links with the employment mediation service TERRA was, able to make the particular employment team more knowledgeable about Deaf Awareness and their rights.
Finally and most recently, our successful 4th Deaf Christmas Business Show 2014 took place on the 6th December at the Clerkenwell Centre. This was a great achievement within the international Deaf community as we offered both business advice and showcased the successful business ventures of some of TERRA’S clients.

The Business Show once again highlighted the campaign to promote and increase awareness of Deaf and Hard of Hearing entrepreneurship for both employed and unemployed people. As the proportion of Deaf and Disabled people are experiencing barriers to gain access to education, employment and setting up businesses, this is at a much higher percentage than the national average so this event was created to do something positive about the situation.
An extremely popular topic with the Deaf audience was provided by our guest speaker also from Terra, Dr. Sheila Osmanovic.  Here she spoke about the main highlights of ‘Try our Wings’, a business initiative (both designed and demonstrated by TERRA at the City Lit Deaf Day) which aims of achieving Deaf people’s dream of business success.

In her talk, Dr. Osmanovic outlined the definition of a business, its responsibilities, explained how to achieve time management through effort and that learning development within the dream in order to achieve your own business. Through their various pathways TERRA has supported many Deaf entrepreneurs over the years in a variety of industries including two promising young Deaf artists and designers who are now running a  newly-opened jewellery e-shop under the brand name ‘Pomme Rose’s Jewellery’.

The 4th Deaf Christmas Business Show 2014 was attended by 135 Deaf and Disabled people, a proportion of these were from overseas; these ‘international’ colleagues were particularly interested in this event as there were few opportunities for Deaf people in their own countries. All attendees agreed the Business Show was a business success for all involved!
Altogether 2014 was a notable year all round for TERRA Consultancy Ltd!
We are looking forward to welcoming the new success ventures in 2015!

LEADING THE FIELD: TERRA PROVIDES BSL HEALTHCARE COMMUNICATION COURSES

Nowadays, many organisations offer courses for people to learn British Sign Language (BSL).  Usually, these courses take the learner through a variety of everyday situations in which a Deaf person might need communication support and these, of course, are very important.  However, it has long been recognised that more specialised courses are needed to meet some very specific needs of the Deaf community in their communication with the hearing. This is especially so in the field of healthcare and medicine.

Now, TERRA Consultancy is proud to announce that they can design and deliver a Level One course in BSL specifically for people working in the healthcare services. This course is ratified and examined by Signature.
Whilst, TERRA can actually design a tailor-made course to suit specific needs a typical course outline would include: medical terminology, medical personnel, useful directional vocabulary and more. The course could also be delivered within a variety of time frames to suit the needs of a healthcare organisation.  Delivered by a Deaf tutor this BSL healthcare course aims to equip the learner with the basic (Level 1) skills essential for a healthcare professional when dealing with the medical needs of a Deaf client.
Should your organisation (ie. hospital, health clinic etc) require us to design and deliver a BSL Level One course for your healthcare professionals – do not hesitate to contact us on:

Deaf man who has set up his own business shows how Access to Work SHOULD work

There’s been a lot of negative stories about deaf people have struggled to gain support from the government’s Access to Work scheme, so here’s a story to remind everyone how the scheme is supposed to work, and how, when it does, deaf people can benefit from it.
A deaf man from Scunthorpe has been able to set up his own website design business, thanks to Access to Work.
The Scunthorpe Telegraph has reported how Shaun Fitzgerald (27) has always found his deafness a barrier to steady employment. Being given Access to Work has allowed him to pay for an interpreter, in order to communicate with clients and take part in meetings.
Cases such as Mr. Fitzgerald’s are an inarguable example of the positive effect successful Access To Work support can provide, and the huge difference it can make to a deaf person’s career prospects, when it’s provided properly.
Mr. Fitzgerald said; “I have set up my own business providing website design and development. “The grant from Access to Work has enabled me to do this because I had restrictions in communication previously. This money has helped pay for an interpreter.
“I am so happy, and it is a relief to be working because I never had this communication support before. I could never have afforded an interpreter while setting up a business.
“It is so much easier for people that can hear, and I think it is something that is taken for granted. Deaf people can’t just pick up the phone and call someone.”
Interpreter Darren Holt said; “I don’t get involved in the business itself, but it is great to see someone doing what they want to do without the barriers there.”
Mr. Fitzgerald continued; “I am no different to anyone else, apart from my ability to communicate. I want to be an example to other deaf people that they can do exactly the same things if they have the right access to communication.”

TERRA SUPPORT AT APPEAL HELPS DEAF CLIENT STAY IN EMPLOYMENT

work employement terra
Terra Consultancy is proud of the work we have done to enhance the employability of Deaf people over the years, We act as a ’bridge’ between employers and Deaf employees and provide practical guidance in developing effective communication strategies, as well as assisting with Access to Work applications, providing Communication Support Workers and BSL Interpreters in the workplace and Deaf Awareness Training.
When a Deaf client came to us last month for advice after being dismissed from work, we helped clarify the disciplinary meeting notes and supported them through the Appeal process, including providing a BSL interpreter for the formal Appeal meeting. Because the client was better able to challenge a mistake and explain the misunderstanding, the original decision to dismiss was overturned with a promise of better communication in future through Access to Work support and they got their job back – brilliant news!
